Airo
Airo, an innovative product I have designed and developed to revolutionize localized transit disinfection. Airo is a game-changing solution that addresses the challenges posed by mass transit vehicles' centralized HVAC systems, offering targeted disinfection where it matters most.
In mass transit systems, traditional disinfection methods involving the entire vehicle can be time-consuming, costly, and disruptive. However, Airo provides a localized disinfection approach that optimizes efficiency while minimizing the risk of exposing the entire vehicle to pathogens.
At the core of Airo's breakthrough technology are patented fins and a PTFE skirt, creating a controlled airflow pattern that pulls air and disinfects it using a UVC LED system. This unique design swirls the air under the UVC LED for a longer duration before the air finds the exit, ensuring thorough disinfection. By extending the air's contact with the UVC light, we significantly reduce the risk of pathogens.
But Airo doesn't stop there. As part of the patent [US20230059472A1], the device's interior is coated with titanium dioxide, complemented by UVA LEDs to induce a photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) reaction. This not only enables powerful disinfection but also effectively reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within the space. To ensure utmost safety, UVC LEDs are integrated on the same board, effectively destroying any harmful radicals generated during the PCO reaction.
In addition to the core Airo design, the patent also includes two alternate builds that further showcase its versatility and flexibility in meeting different disinfection requirements.
The first alternate build utilizes a UVC mercury vapor lamp instead of UVC LEDs. This modification allows for significantly higher UVC output, enabling even more potent disinfection capabilities. With this alternate build, Airo can cater to scenarios where an extra level of disinfection intensity is necessary.
The second alternate build introduces a commercial desktop version of Airo. This innovative design provides users with the freedom to place the device on any suitable surface, such as a wall, desk, or conference table, to achieve localized air disinfection in diverse settings. This portable and user-friendly build extends the applicability of Airo beyond mass transit vehicles, ensuring clean and safe air wherever it's needed.
As a testament to its effectiveness and adaptability, Airo has already been successfully deployed within Easy Mile autonomous buses on the Colorado School of Mines campus. This real-world implementation showcases the versatility of Airo and its capability to deliver reliable disinfection in mass transit environments.
I take great pride in offering Airo as a practical and efficient solution for localized transit disinfection. By specifically targeting areas within mass transit vehicles, Airo minimizes the risks associated with centralized HVAC disinfection methods. With Airo, we aim to revolutionize mass transit hygiene and create safer, cleaner transportation experiences for all.
